The paintings that I find in the Angels series are made with marks coming together reflecting figures made of nature, beings made known by a magnetism of nature marks. I wanted to make paintings that reflected the variety of life found in nature, but in a sort of humanoid form of life that we innately connect with. They are other. I find that there are two purposes for the other. One reason is to have a monster that keeps us within our limits. It roams the boundaries of the known, and it keeps us from losing ourselves. Though, another reason is that we can live vicariously through them in order to explore the unknown. I wanted to make this familiar, yet other-like beings to feel the varieties of life within nature. I wanted to explore the network of life that we miss out on in the limits of what is known.
Creating works with this in mind, led me to see the paint as alive, as a medium that embodies an idea. Each brush stroke starts to feel like its own entity in a way. So it led me to wonder what is in a brushstroke. It is light, specified as color, and it is line, a human movement that gives light a body. Light reveals everything to us, and as we move we get to see the different things light reveals. Without movement, there is no exploration, so it makes me wonder what it is that paint, a movement of light, is exploring.
