I painted this in Big Sur, where the giant redwoods and California cypress meet the purple sand coast.

Painting en plein air gives the painting process an expansive environment for the senses to embody. The soul morphs into this shape of place, and nature allows for us to feel vast. I can’t remember the first layers of this painting, but there are hints of it. There is a window into the original layers, and I remember a similar feeling as I walked through the redwoods. Each trunk framed a window to somewhere deeper into the forest. That window pulls you deeper and deeper down the path as your senses expand into it. You feel the magnetism and curiosity. You discover more into your field of sense with every step. I didn’t have this in mind when I painted, but I certainly embodied this while I was here. As I look at it now in the moment of writing, I’m called back to my memories there. Though, they are also met with the steps I took with each stroke of paint, the things embodied in movement. It leaves me back in that expansive state, wondering, soaking in a presence I find when I’m in nature.
