ABOUT

This piece was painted in the Californian desert in Pioneertown. I found myself driving by an outdoor kitchen, complete with a grand piano, cement teepee, and a fire pit. I decided to check it out, and a man on a motorcycle with a peacock on his shoulder stopped by. He gave me a tour through a nearby boulder garden and caves where some Buddhist monks lived. I camped nearby on a cliff overlooking the entire landscape. This painting came about the next day.

Painting en plain air puts you into a different state compared to painting in a studio. Painting enters an underworld of the senses. It speaks languages our words do not touch, and nature speaks these same languages. So when painting happens in nature, there’s a collaboration that takes places. The conversation becomes embodied in paint, letting us revisit this conversation every time we see the painting.
